Comparison of methods of concentrating and recovering fine gold particles
The data for this article comes from the British Geological Survey Technical Report WC/97/14.
Spirals were tested next, and they had a effective range of 3 mm to 75 microns (200 mesh). Again, as the
particle size decreased, the efficiency decreased, but they were 60% to 80% efficient through the entire
particle size range of 3 mm to 75 microns, so their efficiency did not dramatically decrease until the
particles dropped below 75 microns.
![]() A single start Humphreys mineral spiral, will process about 1-2 tons poer hour of -1/8" ore. The newest concentrators, centrifugal concentrators, or gravity bowls, were then put to the test. These devices tended to have a very good efficiency over a large range, by giving 99% on particles sized from 6 mm ((0.2 inches) down to 30 microns (450 mesh). The separating efficiencies varied with certain types of ores, but quite a few yielded 99% recoveries.
Small centrifugal concentrators, like the illustration of a Falcon Concentrator, will process from a few hundred pounds to a ton of -10 mesh ore per hour
